Holiday Gingerbread Houses

We take gingerbread house making very seriously in the Grant family. We spend more time decorating the inside of the house than the outside, complete with nutcrackers and candy stockings on the mantel and a lit tree with presents. Last year we made a rock candy Christmas tree for the yard with embedded multi-colored lights. We made a rock candy wreath too, but it was too bulky for the house. There was also a Rice Crispy treat sledding hill and a sailboat on the pond.
It takes a long time—after the gingerbread was rolled out and baked, we spent another 6 hours decorating. I recommend baking the gingerbread the day before.
We usually invite another family over to share the fun. This is one of my favorite Christmas traditions, having friends over for a day of creating art with frosting and candy.
