An Interview with Dr. Michele Yatchmeneff

This interview ends with the highest praise I can or ever will receive, and it brought me to tears in the best way. I am so honored Dr. Michele Yatchmeneff agreed to narrate a pivotal scene at the end of DANGEROUS GROUND. As is clear from this interview, Dr. Yatchmeneff is an amazing woman. We need more women like her in STEM and I have made a donation to the organization that helped her achieve her dreams: the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) and encourage you to give too. https://engage.alaska.edu/uaa/ansep

Please listen to this interview and cry with me. I want to thank Montlake and Amazon Publishing for supporting me with publishing this book, and thank Brilliance Publishing for working to cast a woman from the Unangax? community to narrate the role of Marion in DANGEROUS GROUND. I really have no words for what Dr. Yatchmeneff’s comments mean to me, just happy tears.

Fiona and Dean are back in CRASH SITE

Nine months after DANGEROUS GROUND (Fiona Carver #1), Fiona Carver has landed her dream assignment on Ruby Island–and has just learned that wildlife photographer Dean Slater is joining the team. But danger follows this couple around, and his arrival on the island is anything but smooth.

“Rachel Grant does it again! Engaging characters, gripping suspense, and steamy romance. CRASH SITE starts with a bang and delivers non-stop action.”

— New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin

For archaeologist Fiona Carver, the Caribbean glistens with untold menace in a heart-racing novel by Rachel Grant, USA Today bestselling author of Dangerous Ground.

Fiona Carver has landed a dream assignment: conducting an archaeological inventory of Ruby Island, a privately owned, pristine gem in the Caribbean. Two months in paradise exploring and mapping a lush rain forest, vast caves, and a seventeenth-century star fort and following up on legends of hidden Spanish gold. Add a simmering reunion with wildlife photographer Dean Slater and it’s enough to take Fiona’s breath away. But the sparkle fades when Dean’s arrival is met with sudden, terrifying danger.

Reunited and determined to see the project through, Fiona and Dean find themselves in a swirl of intrigue as they delve into the complex history of the unspoiled refuge, now a tropical haven for billionaires and their secrets. But the work isn’t easy, as someone appears determined to kill the project—by any means necessary.

As betrayal casts tropical storm clouds over Ruby Island and treasured friendships dissolve into distrust, one thing becomes clear: Fiona and Dean are trapped in a dangerous paradise.

I hope you enjoy Fiona and Dean’s steamy Caribbean adventure! If you love it, please tell your friends and consider posting a review online. Drop me a note and let me know if I made you laugh out loud or cry (I cried more than a little in writing this one).

Listen to CRASH SITE on Audible

Like DANGEROUS GROUND, CRASH SITE has 3 narrators: Eva Kaminsky, A.T. Chandler, and Nicola Lambo. Romance audiobook fans will likely be familiar with Eva Kaminsky and A.T. Chandler (although they might be more familiar with A.T.’s work as Aiden Snow), but triple threat actress Nicola Lambo (with a long list of amazing credits!) is newer to audiobook narration, and I am deeply honored she agreed to read two scenes written from the point of view of Sadie, a Jamaican archaeologist who plays a key role in CRASH SITE.

There aren’t enough words to convey how thrilled I am that Brilliance Audio once again made sure to cast a woman with the same ethnicity and nationality as the character she is narrating. Click on the link or image below to watch a video (make sure your sound is on) and enjoy a sample from one of Sadie’s scenes.

What A Week!

I’m busy learning all the things at the ROMANCE AUTHOR MASTERMIND conference this weekend. Enjoy this snippet of BROKEN FALCON

Here is a snippet from a scene before Eden learns who Chase really is:

Chase entered the shop, braced for Eden to be put off by seeing him. After all, this wasn’t the same coffee shop where the incident had happened, and she was protective of her information. But she’d also given this as her address, so she knew he had the information legitimately, and it was better than showing up at her townhouse.

She was smiling, though, and it was genuine, so his presence wasn’t unwelcome.

He opened his mouth to say hello, and the word wouldn’t come. It wasn’t his speech impediment that stopped him, it was memories of his last visit to her site.

He wasn’t familiar with navigating the day—or week—after. Especially when only one of them knew what they’d shared.

This was a messed-up situation.

She doesn’t know.

“Hey, stranger,” she said, when he didn’t speak. “You here for coffee, tea…or me?”

He laughed. “Y-you, ac-actually.” He cleared his throat and dropped his voice so she wouldn’t recognize it. Plus it helped with the stutter. “But I’ll take a coffee too.”

She grabbed a ceramic mug—not a to-go cup, he noticed—and held it up. “Just straight drip?”

He nodded and she filled the mug from the ready-made pot and set it on the counter before him. He pulled out his wallet.

“Your money’s no good here. You helped us out last week. Least the owner can do is comp your coffee.”

“It might have been Raptor’s fault there was a problem to begin with.”

“The girl did nothing wrong in having coffee in a coffee shop.” She poured a second mug of coffee and leaned on the counter after taking a sip. “So what’s up? I mean, much as I’d like to believe you’re here for me, I have a feeling there’s more.”

Oh, Eden, you have no idea.

Chase Johnston is leading a double life. After two years of psychological torment, the quiet, highly skilled Raptor operative now has a darker side, and he’s hellbent on bringing sex-traffickers to justice—using any means necessary. The only relief he finds for his troubled mind is a woman he’ll never meet in person.

Eden O’Keeffe is also leading a double life. By day she’s a grad student and barista, but at night she sits in front of a camera and provides companionship for those seeking entertainment, titillation, or simple conversation. She enjoys the freedom of being a siren online, but her secret career comes with risks that force her to hide her true identity at all costs.

When Chase walks into a coffee shop and comes face to face with the one person who makes him feel again, it seems his long nightmare may be coming to an end. But in entering Eden’s world, he’s bringing that nightmare—and the danger that comes with it—to her doorstep.

Serena Bell has a new release!

I absolutely loved this sexy romcom by Serena Bell!! WHAT is Rachel selling on Brody’s boat??? Let me know when you find out…….

kindle      kobo     google play      nook     iBooks

What’s a bad boy doing hosting a book club on his boat? Excellent question. All I can tell you is, it’s not going well. I forgot the bug wipes, the extra TP, and the hand sanitizer, we’re out of wine, and… well, I may have made some people angry, if the reviews are any indication. The only way to dig myself out of this hole is to redeem myself by offering the best girls’ nights out in town.
Enter my best friend’s sister. I’ve gone out of my way to avoid Rachel, since despite her good-girl rep, I can’t seem to get her out of my head. Now she’s in my boat… and if I don’t watch myself, soon she’ll be in my bed. Things are going surprisingly well between us… but I know myself, and I’m not this guy. I’m the guy you want for fantasy fulfillment, not the guy you want for forever.
But what if I need this time to be different?

DANGEROUS GROUND is Available Now!!

Fiona Carver #1

In the remote and unpredictable Aleutians, danger comes without warning in an adrenaline rush of a novel by USA Today bestselling author Rachel Grant.

Archaeologist Fiona Carver has unfinished business in the Aleutian Islands. After an emergency evacuation cut her first expedition short, she’s finally back. But time is not on her side as she races to finish documenting the remnants of a prehistoric village, recover missing artifacts, and track down missing volcanologist Dylan Slater.

Having bluffed his way onto Fiona’s team with fake credentials, wildlife photographer Dean Slater is willing to risk more than federal prison to find his missing brother, but he needs Fiona’s help. She knows the inhospitable terrain better than anyone.

When the two set out together on a perilous journey, it becomes more than a recovery mission. In their fight for survival, nature isn’t the only threat. They aren’t the only ones on the hunt. Mile by dangerous mile, someone is hunting them.

Christina Dodd shared this exclusive excerpt from DANGEROUS GROUND

I’m so thrilled that Christina Dodd shared this DANGEROUS GROUND excerpt on her Facebook page!

Dean lowered the camera and searched with unenhanced vision, spotting a small shape on the roof of one of the dilapidated structures as the moon rose behind it. He raised the viewfinder to his eye and zoomed in. Sure enough, it was a short-eared owl.

He snapped several pictures. These would be keepers, as the moonrise and the crumbling structure combined with the owl’s fixed, knowing gaze gave the image an eerie feel. He could sell these shots. A good price could pay his bail if he ended up getting arrested.

“What is it?” Fiona asked.

“Short-eared owl. Third building over. On the roofline.” He offered her his camera. “Want to see?”

“Yes, please.”

She stepped beside him, and he draped the sturdy strap of his camera around her neck, then pointed the lens toward the round-headed raptor.

She let out a soft gasp. “Oh! He’s beautiful. I mean, if it’s a he.”

“It’s hard to tell with short-eared owls. The females are slightly larger than the males and maybe darker. But that’s difficult to gauge in this light and without both present.”

“Well, it’s beautiful, whatever it is.”

He looked down at the woman holding his favorite camera, as she gazed with rapture at the tiny bird thirty meters away. The rising moon gave her skin an ethereal glow.

Usually, in moments like this, he was the one holding the camera. Or the moment of discovery was planned, expected even, as part of the expedition. Tonight was random; that’s why it felt . . . special.

“Take a few pictures if you want,” he said. “I’ve got more than enough memory cards for the next two weeks.” He bought them in bulk, like they were Costco bags of Halloween candy.

“I don’t know where to begin. I’ve never used anything more complex than a point-and-shoot.”

“I’ve already set the shutter speed and adjusted the light meter for these conditions and that depth of field. You’re good to go.” He moved her finger to the shutter release button.

“Fire away.”She did, and after she took a few, she lowered the camera to look at the screen, which showed the last image taken. “I took that?”

He smiled at her obvious joy. “You did.”

“Well, I kind of cheated, but still, it might be the prettiest photo I’ve ever taken.”

“I’ll email it to you.”

“I’ll have it mounted and framed and tell everyone who will listen that I was the photographer.”

His grin deepened. He liked this side of her. “If you want, I can give you photography lessons when we’re on Chiksook.”

“Really?” Her face lit with excitement. “That would be amazing. Learning how to use a real camera is one of those things I’ve always wanted to do but have never had time for.”

“First weather day, you’ll get a lesson.” And he’d enjoy every moment like this one. Standing close. Teaching her . . .

On instinct, he dipped his head down, making a move without thought. This was as natural as breathing, as ingrained as scratching an itch. Fiona leaned in, lips ever so slightly parted, but then she dropped back. “Bill, don’t. Don’t ruin this. I don’t do field flings. Ever.”

All at once, he was zapped back into the moment. His name was Bill. She was Fiona. His brother’s girlfriend.

And he’d almost kissed her.

Toni Anderson’s COLD BLOODED is only 99c for a limited time!

A journalist searching for the truth about her best friend’s death—and the FBI agent who needs her to stop.

Disgraced investigative journalist Pip West is devastated when she discovers her best friend’s body face-down in a tranquil lake. When cops and federal agents determine that her friend overdosed then drowned, Pip knows they’re mistaken and intends to prove it.

Special Agent Hunt Kincaid doesn’t trust journalists and has no patience for Pip’s delusions, especially since her meddling could reveal why the FBI is interested in her friend’s last days. The dead scientist worked at the cutting edge of vaccine research and might have a connection to a new, weaponized, vaccine-resistant anthrax strain that just hit the black market.

The more Pip digs, the closer she gets to both the sexy FBI agent, and to a bioweapons terrorist who’s more than capable of cold-bloodedly sacrificing anyone who gets in his way.

The RAT Informant Website

My RATinformant  website has been updated (finally!)  The site is a parody website, based on the fictional website “RATinformant.com,” which plays a role in my book, WITHHOLDING EVIDENCE.

Capture

I hope you visit it and look around!

An RWA Update

I also have an update for you regarding RWA – I posted it to the RWA Discussion Forum and am also sharing it with you here:

To me, the worst part about RWA going away isn’t the loss of my dream of winning a RITA (although I will miss that dream, and I know for many that dream was nearly impossible due to racism), nor is it missing the conference, which was one of my favorite events of the year. I won’t miss National because there are other conferences like RAM to fill that void. For me, the worst part is that no other writers’ organization welcomes unpublished authors like RWA did.

I joined RWA in March 2005. I didn’t publish until April 2013. In those 8 years, RWA was vital to me in learning craft and the business and making friends. I found a mentor through RWA. Literally all of my closest writing friends, critique partners, and beta readers I either met directly because of RWA or I can trace our meeting back to an RWA origin. Through RWA I learned how to write a query letter. How to pitch in person. I finaled in the Golden Heart 4 times. A week after the 2011 conference, the year I double finaled, I found myself with 5 offers of representation. (One of whom had been my pitch appointment at National.) Who did I turn to for advice in making that decision? My 2008 GH Pixies. My mentor. Thanks to RWA I had a support network in place to help me.

The agent I signed with (she is still my agent and I love her with all my heart) had initially contacted *me* because she looked up my website after I double finaled. Liz then went on to push me to be a better writer, taking my craft to the next level. Thank you RWA.

I have so much to thank RWA for, and almost none of it is what RWA has done for me as a published author. It’s what the org did for me before April 16, 2013, when my first novel released.

I had been seriously considering running for the board this year to give back to the organization I have been so thankful for, but now, as I resign from RWA, I will be able to use the time I would have given to RWA in a different way. I don’t know the best ways to make a profit from Facebook or AMS ads. I’m not a marketing guru. But I do know craft and I’d like to pay it forward.

In the coming days I’m going to set up a page on my website for aspiring writers to request a read of their first chapter. I am also reaching out to other published authors to ask if they’d be willing to use their now RWA-less time to mentor others. I’ve had a few say yes already.

If you object to being called white or believe that marginalized authors should only express their pain in ways that make you feel comfortable and safe, if you’ve ever used the phrase, “I can’t be racist because I have Black friends/family/coworkers”, or if you in any way shape or form blame AOC for the collapse of RWA, do not email me to ask about being a mentor or mentee. This is not for you.

Unpublished authors: you will need to have completed at least one manuscript to apply.

It is with great heartache that I say goodbye to RWA. But I’m also saying good riddance without an ounce of regret.
