Meet Chase, the hero of BROKEN FALCON (Evidence #11)
There are two lines of dialogue delivered by Chase in Tainted Evidence that I particularly love, because they sum him up quite well after what he’s gone through.
The first one comes after Chase has said some very insightful things to Josh after he allowed his niece to sabotage his relationship with Maddie.
Josh had made it his personal mission to help Chase in his recovery, but he never considered that the guy was way ahead of him in emotional intelligence. He sat on the edge of Chase’s bed, the wind knocked out of him. “There’s nothing wrong with your brain. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
“Aw, hell, man, I’ve got a bag of cats playing with knives in my head. It’s you I can see clearly.“
The second one is after one of the villains is acting in a threatening manner toward Maddie, and Chase is her bodyguard.
Faster than lightning, Chase had the bigger man in a tight hold, Troy’s face pressed to the door panel and his arm wrenched behind his back.
“You can’t do this,” Troy said, his voice cracking with pain as Chase torqued his arm. “This is my house.”
“I can do whatever I want if I think Maddie is threatened. Did you miss the part where I’m her bodyguard?”
“I didn’t threaten her.”
“I didn’t like your tone. Or your words.” His voice went really low. “After what Maddie’s been through, the cops will believe me over you, especially given that there are photos of you with her abductor for all the world to see.”
“I didn’t have anything to do with that! Hell, for all we know, she made it up.”
Chase wrenched Troy’s arm higher. “Let me tell you something, Troy.” The name sounded ominous the way Chase said it. “I might look like a nice guy, but deep down, I’ve got a shit ton of rage, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to let it all out. So don’t fuck with me.”
These two lines, in which Chase admits in different ways the struggle he’s having in his mind after the torture and abuse he’s suffered, made me so eager to write his book. Chase was a young, sweet, funny, shy man before he first came on scene in Incriminating Evidence. You see a bit of who he was in Night Owl. But now he has a dark side and he’s trying to figure out who he really is.
I’m excited to share that Broken Falcon is now available for presale! The release date listed is in December, but it will be moved up–probably to late July–as soon as the first round of copyedits are complete. (Given the craziness of the last year, I didn’t want to risk having to push the release date back if something unexpected came up.)?

Chase Johnston is leading a double life. After two years of psychological torment, the quiet, highly skilled Raptor operative now has a darker side, and he’s hellbent on bringing sex-traffickers to justice—using any means necessary. The only relief he finds for his troubled mind is a woman he’ll never meet in person.
Eden O’Keeffe is also leading a double life. By day she’s a grad student and barista, but at night she sits in front of a camera and provides companionship for those seeking entertainment, titillation, or simple conversation. She enjoys the freedom of being a siren online, but her secret career comes with risks that force her to hide her true identity at all costs.
When Chase walks into a coffee shop and comes face to face with the one person who makes him feel again, it seems his long nightmare may be coming to an end. But in entering Eden’s world, he’s bringing that nightmare—and the danger that comes with it—to her doorstep.?
Trying to remember which books include Chase? We first meet him in the prequel Night Owl which leads to the important role he plays in Incriminating Evidence. He’s next on scene in Silent Evidence and again plays an important role. He appears in both books that follow: Winter Hawk and Tainted Evidence. You do not need to read these books to enjoy Broken Falcon! Links are provided for those who prefer to read in order. Night Owl is free in E and audiobook.
