Salish Sea Conference

This past week, the Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference celebrated its 30th anniversary and hosted a conference that’s the largest and “most comprehensive event of its kind in the region. The purpose of the conference is to assemble scientists, First Nations and tribal government representatives, resource managers, community and business leaders, policy makers, educators, and students to present the latest scientific research on the state of the ecosystem, and to guide future actions for protecting and restoring the Salish Sea ecosystem.” (from https://wp.wwu.edu/salishseaconference/)

Seeing #SalishSea trending on Twitter warms my heart. I loved writing about the Salish Sea in COLD EVIDENCE and my marine biologist hero and heroine would be eager for this conference.

The Squamish Tribe opened the conference, which was attended by 1300 people from the US and Canada.

Ellen discovers that a number of women with similar features and hair colour have also vanished in the Worcester area. Ellen and Brian suspect a serial kidnapper is to blame, and without a body, the police are happy to leave the case in their hands to solve.

Hoping the women are still alive, Ellen digs for clues and races to find the women, despite her troubled private life and a meddlesome stepfather with a violent secret.

Photos of Djibouti and New Book News!

Last week my husband returned from his second trip to Djibouti, where he located and recorded archaeological sites for the US Department of Defense.

Thanks to his travels, volatile Djibouti, with its amazing archaeological record, permanent US military presence, strategic location, harsh landscape, and desperate need for water is the setting of TINDERBOX, the first book in a new series that takes my fascination with the intersection of archaeology, politics, and war to a new level on the African continent.

While he was there, my husband took pictures for me (visit me on Facebook to see them all!) so I can better describe the wadis, archaeological features, acacia thorns, and (my fictional) military base. He also picked up a bunch of items for me to give away to readers when the book and series launch. At present TINDERBOX is being shopped to traditional publishers, so I can’t make promises for when it will release, but I can share the book description and some of those photos now.

TINDERBOX (Flashpoint #1)

THE WEEKLY RECAP – now with Bacon!

This week I’m working hard on EVIDENCE 7, but I thought I’d take a break to share a fun fondue recipe with everyone.

Bacon-Wrapped Tater Tots

I’ve made these several different ways, but my favorite is the fondue method, mostly because I eat fewer (it takes time to cook!) than if I have a plate of them ready to go at once.

You will need:
canola oil
1 package bacon – cut strips in 3rds
1 bag tater tots – thawed
toothpicks or skewers

Optional:
jalapeño slices
crumbled blue cheese
shredded cheddar cheese
ranch dip/blue cheese dip/catsup

Stove top method:
Wrap bacon around thawed tot and secure with a toothpick (the tot needs to be thawed or it will be hard to pierce with the toothpick). You can return tots and bacon to the freezer if cooking on the stove.

If using jalapeño, wrap bacon around both tot and thin slice of the pepper then secure with toothpick. I’m not a jalapeño fan, so I’ve only made it this way once – both those who like jalapeños loved them.

Fry tots in oil in batches until the bacon is crisp.

Top with cheeses as desired while hot.

Oil Fondue method:
Prep tots without toothpicks and put one or two tots on a bamboo skewer. Do NOT refreeze. Prep several skewers to start and reuse skewers throughout meal. It takes several minutes for bacon to cook in a fondue pot. Chicken and beef can be cooked in the same pot. Be prepared that the cooking oil will be very fatty at the end.
